About Black Maternal Health

Black Maternal Health

Since 1913, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated has upheld the values of high scholastic standards, dedicated community service, and enduring sisterhood. Sorors throughout the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia will continue to embody these values during the 2025 Week of Impact.

From January 12–18, 2025, chapters across the DMV will participate in service projects focused on raising awareness and supporting initiatives that address Black Maternal Health. These efforts will highlight the urgent need to improve health outcomes for Black mothers and families while advocating for equitable healthcare practices. Funds raised will also support Delta Sigma Theta's international projects. Your donation will help us to continue our mission of supporting our community. Every dollar counts and will make a difference in the lives of those we serve.

How It All Began

Since the early 1990s, Delta Sigma Theta chapters across the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia have gathered bi-annually during Founders Day for a rededication ceremony and luncheon. This tradition aimed to strengthen the bond of sisterhood through fellowship. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the effort evolved to focus on impactful community service.

In 2021, 26 chapters across the Washington Metropolitan Area hosted Day of Service projects focusing on Elder Care, recognizing the need to support seniors in our communities. More than 1,300 members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority rendered 3,698 hours of service, reaching 947 community members. Additionally, $47,000 was raised for the Sorority's International Awareness and Involvement Sustainability Plan to support all seven of the Sorority’s international projects.

In 2023, the legacy of service continued with an expansion from a Day of Service to a Week of Impact. The 2023 Week of Impact focused on Domestic Violence awareness, successfully raising $22,270 through various fundraising efforts, including t-shirt sales, chapter donations, and individual contributions.

This year the 2025 Week of Impact builds on this legacy of service by addressing Black Maternal Health, a critical issue affecting our communities. Chapters will engage in service projects, educational initiatives, and advocacy to ensure healthier outcomes for Black mothers and families.

Join us as we honor the legacy of our Founders through impactful service and advocacy that uplifts our communities. Together, we can make a difference.
